Internship Program

United Way of Hernando County has an ongoing Disaster Relief Volunteer database of citizens who may be called upon in case of a disaster. Volunteers will be matched accordingly with the needs of the community. If you are in the medical, construction, transportation, communication, labor force, food service, security, and/or counseling fields, the community would need your help.

Disaster Relief Volunteers are designed to build new alliances between volunteer managers and a variety of emergency management, first responder and community organizations where needed the most.

Make sure you are comfortable during your volunteer hours. CLOSED TOED SHOES ARE REQUIRED. The following items are suggestions for your personal volunteer emergency kit: snacks, drinks, bug spray, flashlight, extra batteries, hand sanitizer, lawn chair, and any personal medications needed. Remember, this kit is for you personally in order to keep you working comfortably during this time.

Girl Scouts learn by doing, and they love trying new things and learning new skills! Do you have a hobby, skill, or career that you would like to share with a Girl Scout troop? Some examples are teaching girls to sew, woodworking, talking to them about your career, and more!

Respond to this need to learn more about how you could lead a group of girls through an activity that you are knowledgeable about.

A Girl Scout troop is a group of Girl Scouts and volunteers that meet regularly, usually about twice a month. Troops set their own schedule for meetings, decide what activities they want to enjoy such as earning badges, field trips, camping, and community service projects.

Troop leaders make a key difference in the lives of girls by guiding them through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience! At GSWCF, we want leading a troop to be as amazing for you as it will be for the girls. That's why we support you every step of the way.

Volunteer at Girl Scout Fest! This annual event highlights what Girl Scouts is all about: Trying new things, being your best self, and making the world a better place. Volunteers at this event will help create a memorable experience for 2,000+ attendees! Multiple roles and shifts are available. All roles have morning and afternoon shift options on Saturday 9/27/25: 8:30am - 12pm and 11:30am - 2:30pm. You may sign up for two shifts if you like, even though they overlap. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Help us raise awareness about the Lighthouse programs and services so we can help more people who are visually impaired and blind. We are looking for volunteer who are interested in helping us man tables at events in the community. Through discussions with staff and being privy to discussions between LVIB staff and the public, you will learn about Lighthouse's programs and services and soon you will be able to provide Lighthouse information and support directly to the public.

Dawn Center of Hernando County is looking for volunteers who have a few hours each week or a few days each month to assist with our donation inventory. 

This job is simple enough that almost anyone could do it!  But we do need volunteers who are available to work weekday business hours. This job can be done by students, but a parent or guardian must be present. All Dawn Center volunteers must complete a volunteer application and background screening.

The United Way Student Board is a campus-based community change organization, led by local students, that addresses critical Education, Health, and Financial Stability issues in the community. The Student Board brings insight on campaigning, community awareness, and gives students in Hernando County the opportunity to develop leadership skills.

Time and again in history, young people have catalyzed change. This is their opportunity to make a difference!

Despite the uniqueness of each chapter, United Way Student Board Members should know that they are part of an international network of young people working to advance the common good.

All volunteer hours are recorded and may be used as community service hours for school with the approval of United Way.

Help with events in the community before the date and/or help on the date of the event. Activities may include packing, setup, cleanup, teardown, unpacking and/or performing various tasks such as being a runner or manning a table, helping at registration, helping with food, answering questions, etc. If physically able, there might be some lifting, carrying and loading of materials. 

Events could be anywhere in Pasco and Hernando and you will usually need to find your own transportation. Most in-person volunteering is done Monday to Thursday during business hours however our many awareness and occasional fundraising events usually occur at night or on the weekend. Some of these events are held outside.

Dawn Center relies on the generous community of Hernando County to help fund projects that grants sometimes do not cover. We are looking for volunteers to help in event planning for our annual fundraisers and help in fundraising efforts within the county. 

A qualified volunteer will help in making phone calls, site visits to sponsors, and attending committee planning sessions and helping at the events themselves. Some of these tasks can be done from the comfort of your own home.

Dawn Center of Hernando County is looking for an administrative volunteer that would be available 1 day a week to assist with administrative assistance. 

We are looking for someone who has experience working with computers, Microsoft Word and Excel trained, and decent math and computing skills. The position would need to be for someone available weekday business hours.

JD Floyd Elementary is looking for volunteers to make a SPLASH with our students! We are interested in starting a lunch bunch group. We have a need to have our students interact with various community members in a positive way.

All documents should be compatible with Adobe's CS6 Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and sometimes Dreamweaver. However we also work with PowerPoint and Publisher and if none of these options are available to you, we can recreate your design. When the artwork is done, we need/will retain the native artwork in case there are further changes, or if some or all of your artwork can be used elsewhere in our agency.

People Helping People in Hernando County is looking for a volunteer to come in to the HELP Center to ensure the facility is clean and operating smoothly. Hours of the facility are M-F 9a - 3p but are flexible within those days and hours for a volunteer.

Itself, a volunteer role, the volunteer program coordinator is responsible for overseeing and coordinating Volunteer activities for volunteer base of People Helping People. Duties may include screening and interviewing Volunteers, placing Volunteers in different roles based on their qualifications, and maintaining accurate Volunteer records. Great opportunity for college student or recent grad to build resume or a retiree still wanting to stay busy. Some tasks can be performed remotely.

Do you love animals, but only want a short-term commitment? Then this opportunity is the perfect fit for you! We need volunteers to take animals into their home on a temporary basis for the following reasons:

We need volunteers to take some of our fur babies to vet appointments or pick them up from other shelters or rescues. This would include going to Animal Services in Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties.

Often times we intake animals that need medical attention, need a check up or need shots so they are up to date on their yearly vaccinations.

Do you like dogs, but can't have one at home? We need help enriching our fur babies and need volunteers to ensure all our dogs get regular exercise. This includes walking and outdoor play. The shelter is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, and Saturdays from 10am-5pm.

Provides 24 hour emergency response to local disasters, particularly house fires, ensuring that those affected have access to resources for basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing.

Position is responsible for the tasks involved in the Disaster Action Team program including:

1. Supporting the annual goals, RDO objectives, and regional/chapter plan for DAT services through participation in meetings, projects, and local response activities.
2. Completes all required training and maintains current training standard as DAT program requirements change.
3. Attends regular team meetings and training as required by the region/territory.
4. Completes assigned projects and local response activities according to the needs of the DAT program.
(Preparing vehicles, response materials, administrative support of the DAT program and other tasks assigned by the DAT Leader.)

Ability to:
• Follow and execute requests received from supervisor with little or no supervision.
• Adapt to change, negotiate compromise and tolerate ambiguity.
• Build effective relationships with others who can help with work-related goals.

We have two clothing resource centers that serving foster families, and we are always in need of help!

These are our two locations: 

Use the internet & the phone to find prizes for events and donations for services and other expenses and/or use the phone to develop/update the Lighthouse database. Once fully trained, the phone fundraiser may choose to work at home occasionally.

United Way of Hernando County has an ongoing VRC database of citizens who may be called upon in case of a disaster. The purpose of this initiative is to help ensure the readiness of the community to manage un-affiliated volunteers in the aftermath of disaster through community collaboration, planning, training and exercising of emergency procedures.

VRC Core Volunteers would maintain a key role with organized efforts through United Way and Hernando County Emergency Management after a local disaster.

The Lighthouse needs volunteers for committees to help with activities such as awareness, fundraising, and events. Committee meetings are scheduled as required.  We hope to attract volunteers who have experience and possibly connections in various sectors/areas/disciplines--in order to increase our knowledge base and improve effectiveness.

The Lighthouse uses a customized Salesforce Starter Pack to track services and donations, and to maintain our mailing lists. We are looking for a developer with intermediate or advanced Salesforce capabilities, who is interested in helping mentor our database administrator so we are able to create and design professional reports and campaigns. So, if you know how to code in Salesforce, we would love to hear from you. This is a remote opportunity--you use all your own equipment and collaborate online or by phone with our database administrator. 

Our shelter for young women is located in an older home. We have many maintenance needs. We don’t expect to find one person who can do it all: painting, carpentry, yard work. Just offer the skills you do have and we will be so very grateful. Work your own hours. TLC will pay for the materials.

The hours would be from 8am-4pm, 2-3 days a week for up to 25 hours.

Pasco Kids First has opportunities at our New Port Richey office for office volunteers to assist with data entry, filing, mailings, IT help, and other office projects. Flexible times are available.

This is a live concert series program and food truck rally located at the beautiful Hernando County Band Shell Pavilion at 205 E. Ft. Dade Ave, Brooksville, FL 34601. The event happens on the 2nd Friday of each month.  The fun kicks off at 5:00pm and ends at approximately 10:00pm.

This event is a community revitalization effort to regrow a connection to the Hernando County Community to its only downtown - Historic Downtown Brooksville.  High energy bands are booked to play two music sets throughout the evening at 6:00pm and 8:00pm.  Food trucks will be parked along Ft. Dade Avenue providing a wide variety of culinary treats.  There will be a full selection of cocktails, beer and wine.

We need volunteers to help setup between 3pm-5pm, operational support from 5pm-10pm and tear-down & clean-up from 9pm-11pm.  If interested, please reach out.

Healthy Families and Pasco Kids First has a variety of fundraising and family events that utilize volunteers to help with check in, selling raffle tickets, serving food, helping kids with arts and crafts and more. Events are held in West and East Pasco and occasionally Hernando County.

Healthy families is seeking students and professionals for volunteer opportunities to work with the staff to assist with IT work such as troubleshooting computers, software, Pasco Kids First/Healthy Families websites etc. Volunteer must have experience in the IT field.
