In 2017, our events will be held:
- Brooksville: Wednesday, October 11th, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., outside the Hernando County Courthouse (Jefferson Street & Main Street)
- New Port Richey: Thursday, October 12th, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., outside the West Pasco Government Center (Little Road & Citizen Drive)
Everyone is invited to participate as we raise awareness on the street, take members of the public across the street under blindfold, and visually impaired staff and clients demonstrate independent living skills.
White Cane Awareness coincides with National White Cane Day which is held each year on October 15. White Cane Awareness Day has been celebrated in various places since 1964 when a joint resolution of Congress was signed into law. The purpose of the day is to increase the public’s knowledge about the white cane—the device used by people with visual impairments to help them travel safely and live independently. The white cane is the universal symbol for blindness or visual impairment. It is a common misconception that the white cane is only used by those who are totally blind. It is also used by individuals who have some remaining vision.
